The sks as a "sniper rifle" is a joke. yeah a sniper "could use one if that was all he had.
But they are about a 2-4 MoA firearm. good to hit 6" target out to about 200 yards
The 7.62x39 round drops like a stone past 250 yards and has lost much of it's punch past 300.
But It is a fun range gun and works well as a SHTF/WROL gun. ammo is cheap and you can hunt deer within 150 yrds without issue with the proper ammo

I have a kickass little Ruger 10/22 that i love for plinking. Dropped a red dot on the top of it and it's actually so accurate that shooting at 100 yards isn't any fun anymore. I tend to shoot for steel targets up to 400 yards out.

Only problem is that at that range you can't hear it hit, you have to have someone spot to tell you if you even hit it. Most fun is about 250 yards, because you can still hear that satisfying "THUNK".

I also have an AR-15 that I built myself, chambered in .223. Same size bullet as the .22 but a hell of a lot more punch. I'm looking to build a new upper for it and chamber it in 7.62... just for the hell of it. Either that or just go for the AK-47.

The best fun/$ ratio in rifles seems to be : .22 rim-fire, 9mm carbines,.223,7.62x39. 308 ,30-06 ,30-30 12ga in the middle.50 bmg is close to the other end at under 200 meters. if you want to blast the shit out of something at close-mid range with one shot go .308,30-06, or 12ga...
I have stuff in .22, .243 7.62x39, .357mag,30-30,.35rem,12ga
Nothing beets .22 rim-fire hands down. for guilt-free fun

Seriously, For almost no cost you can pick up a few hundred rounds in .22 and spend hours shooting. It might not be quite as satisfying as firing off that 30-06 but it's still stupidly fun.

I'd put 7.62 over .223 in terms of cost to fun ratio. 7.62s are significantly cheaper and have a longer reach. I just like my .223 because I can swap the chamber out for a .22 chamber in like ten seconds flat and use my AR-15 to plink an afternoon away.

Glaser make good ammo. I load my own for .357 but keep Hornady ftx rounds in my speedloaders.
but I shoot copper washed swc at the range.
